Market Talk

It was a mixed week for stocks, with the S&P and Nasdaq finishing slightly higher but the Dow ending in the red due in part to Cisco’s earnings. But on the positive, it was strong for memory names after Sandisk’s investor day.

3 Stories Moving the Market

These are some of the biggest stories from the second half of the week that had an influence on market action.

Q2 Earnings Season: This Week’s Roundup

It was a mixed week for companies reporting earnings, with most names beating on EPS and revenue, but reactions were split as margins, guidance, and AI-driven backlogs drove very different stock moves.

Cisco $CSCO ( ▼ 1.58% ) posted a record fiscal fourth quarter and raised full-year guidance on strong AI infrastructure orders, but shares dropped roughly 8% this week as investors focused on margin pressure.

  • EPS: $1.22 vs. $1.17 est.

  • Revenue: $17.3B vs. $16.82B est.

  • Highlights: Revenue +18% YoY, GAAP net income +51% to $3.9B, Q4 AI infrastructure orders brought FY26 total to $9.3B, non-GAAP operating margin narrowed to 35.9%, product orders +35% YoY (+25% ex-hyperscalers), Q1 FY27 guide of $18.0B-$18.2B revenue and $1.08-$1.10 GAAP EPS

Applied Materials $AMAT ( ▼ 5.12% ) delivered record quarterly revenue and topped EPS estimates while guiding well above the prior quarter's pace, though shares fell nearly 4% this week on a slight revenue miss.

Rocket Lab $RKLB ( ▲ 0.19% ) posted record revenue and backlog on surging Space Systems growth, though a wider than expected loss tied to acquisition costs sent shares sharply lower this week.

  • EPS: -$0.08 vs. -$0.06 est.

  • Revenue: $234.1M vs. $230.9M est.

  • Highlights: Revenue +62% YoY and +16.8% sequentially, Space Systems revenue +93.6% YoY to $189.5M, backlog +137% YoY to a record $2.36B, adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed to $8.8M from $27.6M a year ago, closed the Mynaric and Motiv acquisitions and announced a deal to acquire Iridium, Q3 guide of $250M-$265M in revenue

CoreWeave $CRWV ( ▼ 0.97% ) beat on both lines and raised full-year guidance as AI cloud demand kept accelerating, sending shares up roughly 19% this week.

  • EPS: -$1.03 vs. -$1.20 est.

  • Revenue: $2.58B vs. $2.56B est.

Coherent $COHR ( ▼ 0.43% ) closed out fiscal 2026 with record quarterly revenue and EPS on accelerating AI optical demand, but shares fell more than 4% this week even as management guided well above the prior quarter's pace.

  • EPS: $1.74 vs. $1.65 est.

  • Revenue: $2.05B vs. $2.03B est.

Two Key Inflation Reports Give Markets Hope For No Rate Hikes

This week brought two major inflation reports covering July data. Consumer prices came in exactly where economists expected, showing a modest increase for the month and continued easing on a yearly basis. Producer prices came in cooler than forecasters anticipated, holding flat for the month even as some service categories saw firmer price increases.

🔑 Key Points

  • Headline CPI. Consumer prices matched estimates, rising 0.1% in July as expected.

  • Core CPI. Core prices also matched forecasts, rising 0.2% in July.

  • Headline PPI. Producer prices came in flat, below the 0.2% estimate.

  • Core PPI. Core producer prices rose 0.2%, below the 0.3% forecast.

  • Goods vs Services. Final demand goods fell 0.7% while services rose 0.2% in July.

👀 What You Need to Know

Surprisingly producer prices coming in below forecasts was the bigger market mover than the consumer figure, which matched expectations. A flat producer reading suggests the cost pressure businesses feared passing along may be starting to ease. Producer prices often move ahead of consumer prices by several months, which could be a sign of cooler CPI numbers ahead. We get another full round of CPI and PPI data, along with the Fed's preferred PCE gauge, before the next policy meeting in September.

🔐 Edge Takeaway: This week’s inflation data gives the Fed considerably more room to wait, with market odds for a hike falling to just 28% from 56% last week, but…upgrade to Edge+ to read the Full Edge Takeaway.

SanDisk Investor Day: Unveils 80% Margin Target, Stock Surges 35% This Week

SanDisk $SNDK ( ▲ 7.4% ) held its 2026 Investor Day in New York, where management laid out a long-term financial framework for fiscal years 2028 through 2030. CEO David Goeckeler and CFO Luis Visoso presented the company's growth strategy and addressed investor concerns raised after the prior earnings call. The event also covered new customer supply agreements and the company's technology roadmap for AI-driven storage demand.

🔑 Key Points

  • Long-Term Financial Model. Sets 80% gross margin and 75% operating margin targets through fiscal 2030.

  • New Business Model Deals. Signed with eight customers, covering roughly two-thirds of FY2028 bit volume.

  • Cash Return Plan. Company plans to return 100% of excess cash to shareholders.

  • AI Storage Demand. Enterprise flash market projected to reach 1.2 zettabytes by 2030.

  • Stock Reaction. Shares closed +13.7% on the day itself, +35% on the week, lifting market cap to ~$241B.

👀 What You Need to Know

SanDisk locked in deals with eight big customers that set prices and volumes in advance. That gives the company steady income even if memory chip prices swing around later. Last week's earnings call worried investors because next year's output growth guidance looked weak. This week’s presentation seemed to have calmed those fears by showing a clear plan through 2030. The stock jump also pushed up shares of Western Digital, Micron, and SK Hynix.

🔐 Edge Takeaway: Sandisk’s Investor Day gave investors far more confidence in the strength of future earnings than they had after last week’s earnings report, when the stock sold off because Q1 guidance…upgrade to Edge+ to read the Full Edge Takeaway.
