Portfolio Update - December 2024

The stock market surged following the election, and so did our portfolios

Good evening investors!

Every month we publish our “Portfolio Update” — Edge+ members get a full access look into our portfolios, including holdings, performance, activity and our watchlists for the upcoming month.

Let’s dive in.

Portfolio Update - Mark

For those new here, IE+ subscribers get full access to my monthly dividend portfolio updates, which includes:

  • Portfolio Snapshot

  • Portfolio Performance

  • Stock Purchases

  • Stock Sells

  • Watchlist

*Note - this is the ONLY place where people can find our entire portfolios.

Portfolio Snapshot

As of the end of November 2024, my portfolio contained 50 total positions, which is 1 less than the prior month.

You can see all the portfolio activity down below, but first, here is a snapshot of my entire portfolio:

Portfolio Performance

In this section, I will highlight the performance of the portfolio both on a MONTHLY and Year-To-Date basis.

For comparison, here is how the benchmark S&P 500 did during those same time frames:

And here is how the equal weighted S&P 500 performed:

The portfolio saw its best month since May, but that was still not enough as the S&P 500 climbed 5.7% during the month of November. The equal weighted S&P 500 grew even more during the month, climbing 6.2%.

This puts my streak of 7 straight years of beating the S&P 500 on the brink with only 1 month left in 2024. However, I will never complain about 20% plus gains during any specific year, or multiple years in a row for that matter.

In the past portfolio update, I spoke about the broadening out we were starting to see in the market, hence the equal-weighted S&P 500 having a huge month. We continue to see the semiconductor market take a breather after a huge run for much of the year. Since topping out in early July, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) is down more than 15%. Over that same period, shares of Nvidia are up less than 5% as well.

However, December typically brings a little volatility with investors looking to make moves around tax loss harvesting and they use some of that selling to reposition their portfolios for the next year. This is something I have been doing as well, hence the selling and cash raises I did in November.

Stay tuned within our discord where Edge+ members get TRADE ALERTS, being notified of any changes I make to my portfolio in real time.

Monthly Activity

In this section, I detail out any transactions that were made within the portfolio during the month.

As we head into the final month of the year, I will look for some tax loss harvesting opportunities as well as look for areas to reposition my portfolio for 2025. I started this process already by…upgrade to Edge+ to see Mark’s entire portfolio and the moves made during the month.

Portfolio Update - Chris

Every month, Investor’s Edge+ members get updates to my individual brokerage portfolio, which includes:

  • Portfolio Performance

  • Stock Purchases

  • Stock Sells

  • Watchlist

*Note - this update ONLY includes my brokerage portfolio. Retirement accounts, cryptocurrency, real estate and cash/cash equivalents outside of the brokerage are excluded from this update.

Portfolio Snapshot

As of the end of November 2024, my brokerage portfolio contained 58 total positions — 56 stock holdings and 2 options contract.

Here is a snapshot of my portfolio:

Portfolio Performance

In this section, I will highlight the performance of my portfolio in November as well as for the full year.

For comparison, here is how the benchmark S&P 500 did during those same time frames:

And here is how the equal weighted S&P 500 performed:

My portfolio outperformed both the S&P 500 and the Equal Weight S&P 500 in November 2024, with a monthly return of +6.60%, compared to 5.74% for the S&P 500 and 6.24% for the Equal Weight S&P 500.

Its strong performance stems from a diversified allocation strategy and targeted exposure to high-performing stocks and sectors. Notably, the portfolio's significant weighting in Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) (20.99%) ensured alignment with broader market gains while additional exposures provided an edge.

Key stock contributions included Shopify (+47.8%), Block (+26.5%), Netflix (+25.6%), and Salesforce (+13.3%). These stocks posted notable returns due to favorable earnings reports and strong investor sentiment.

Additionally, the inclusion of defensive names like Procter & Gamble (+9.0%) and energy assets like Enbridge (+9.4%) and the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas ETF (XOP) (+11.3%) added stability and value in a month with sector rotation trends favoring large caps and value stocks.

The portfolio's deliberate allocation across diverse sectors and strategic stock/ETF picks has led to strong risk-adjusted returns so far this year. With a year-to-date gain of 25.72%, this portfolio has slightly underperformed the S&P 500’s 26.47% gain, but showcases the benefits of active management and sector tilts in an otherwise bullish market environment.

Monthly Activity

In this section, I will go through the transactions that were made within the portfolio during the month.

October presented itself with plenty of uncertainty and we…upgrade to Edge+ to see Chris’s entire portfolio and the moves made during the month.

Closing Remarks

We have one final month left to try and beat the greater S&P 500, which has been performing at a strong clip, yet again. At this point in time, we still have a key CPI report, which will be delivered by the time you receive this update, and it alone has the ability to alter the market in the near-term, but we still believe the markets will finish the year on a strong note.

We will continue to look for new ideas in the market and bring you as much information as we can to give you an EDGE in the markets.
