Portfolio Update - Mark

Portfolio Snapshot

As of the end of July 2024, my portfolio contained 50 total positions, a net decrease of 3 positions from the prior month.

You can see all the portfolio activity down below, but first, here is a snapshot of my entire portfolio:

Portfolio Performance

In this section, I will highlight the performance of the portfolio both on a MONTHLY and Year-To-Date basis.

For comparison, here is how the benchmark S&P 500 did during those same time frames:

The portfolio saw its third consecutive monthly gain in a row and its 6th out of 7 months so far in 2024, which has me quite pleased. During the month we did take some strategic profits and raised some cash, which you will see in the “Monthly Activity” section down below. One of the best gains was 3M, a stock we entered in June, saw a 20%+ pop after earnings in July and closed the position.

Mag 7 and Technology as a whole has broken down a bit in the market, but our well diversified portfolio has seen strong gains from the REIT sector and other value stocks. REITs is a sector I have been alluding to for the past few months and here we are sitting on double digit monthly gains for many key names.

We have seen an uptick in volatility of late, but with September approaching, which happens to be the worst month of the year, historically, for stocks, we are looking to raise some cash for any opportunities that present themselves.

As of the end of July 2024, my brokerage portfolio contained 57 total positions — 56 stock holdings and 1 options contract.

Portfolio Performance

In this section, I will highlight the performance of my portfolio in July as well as for the full year.

For comparison, here is how the benchmark S&P 500 did during those same time frames:

And here is how the equal weighted S&P 500 performed:

It was another good month for the portfolio as it increased +3.0% in July.

As I have mentioned the last few months, Mag7 stocks have been the entire market and skewing the overall S&P 500 returns. Well, that seemed to finally explode in July.

Nearly all Mag7 stocks were either in or near correction territory at the end of the month. Tesla crashed -19.3%, Nvidia dropped -18.0%, Meta was down -14.5%, Alphabet fell -13.7%, Microsoft decreased -10.4%, Amazon declined -9.9%, and Apple was down the least at -8.3%.

Now, this could be a healthy pullback or could be the start of trouble ahead for the market. That’s why I like to have protection on my portfolio, remain patient and stick to my long term strategy of buying great names at a great prices.

I was able to make some strong moves in the month, all while sharing them in real time on the Discord.

Closing Remarks

Overall, we continue to be pleased with our portfolios and their performance during this difficult time. Volatility has crept back into the markets, but our patience and diversification is starting to pay off not only for our portfolios, but for Edge+ members as well.

The market is approaching a weak period, which is why we saw some cash raised in the portfolios as we continue to look for opportunities, but also expect some potential downside to continue, and we will be ready.

As always, continue to perform your due diligence ahead of time so you are ready when opportunities present themselves.
