DOJ indicates it’s considering Google breakup following monopoly ruling

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has made recommendations aimed at addressing Google's dominance in the search engine market, including the potential breakup of the company as an antitrust remedy.

The DOJ's proposals involve various measures like contract restrictions, non-discrimination rules, data sharing, and ensuring interoperability. It is also considering limiting Google's use of products like Chrome, Play, and Android to favor its own search engine over competitors, including emerging AI-driven features.

Additionally, the DOJ suggested ending Google's lucrative default search engine agreements with companies like Apple and Samsung, possibly through a "choice screen" that would allow users to select other search engines.

These recommendations follow a judge's ruling in August that Google holds a monopoly in search, violating antitrust laws under the Sherman Act.

PepsiCo trims revenue outlook as North American snacking, key international markets lag

PepsiCo lowered its full-year outlook for organic revenue growth after two consecutive quarters of weaker-than-expected sales.

In Q3, net income fell to $2.93 billion, or $2.31 per share, down from $3.09 billion, or $2.24 per share, a year earlier. Net sales declined 0.6% to $23.32 billion.

Organic revenue grew by 1.3%, but volumes for both food and beverages dropped by 2%, particularly in North America where consumer demand weakened. Quaker Foods saw the largest volume decline at 13%, while Frito-Lay dropped 1.5%.

Pepsi now expects only a low-single-digit increase in organic revenue for 2024, down from its previous 4% growth target, but still anticipates an 8% rise in core earnings per share.d the use of automation with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) broke down.

📚 EDGE-UCATION: What is the difference between revenue (net sales), net income, and organic revenue?

  1. Revenue (Net Sales): This is the total amount of money a company earns from selling its goods or services before any expenses are subtracted. Net sales are typically calculated after deducting returns, allowances, and discounts. It’s a measure of the company’s top-line performance and reflects the total sales generated in a given period.

  2. Net Income: This is the company’s profit after all expenses, taxes, interest, and costs (including operating expenses, depreciation, and other non-operating items) have been subtracted from total revenue. It’s often referred to as the "bottom line" because it reflects the company's overall profitability after all costs have been accounted for.

  3. Organic Revenue: This refers to the revenue generated from a company's existing operations, excluding any impacts from acquisitions, divestitures, or currency fluctuations. It shows the company’s true growth from its core business activities, as it strips out the effects of buying or selling parts of the business and external economic factors like exchange rates. It’s used to gauge how well a company’s core business is performing over time.
