Market Talk
The major indexes are lower to start the week as tariff news and Powell’s comments weigh on the markets.

3 Stories Moving the Market
These are some of the biggest stories so far this week that are having an influence on market action.
The latest on tariffs: U.S.-China Trade Tensions Intensify

The U.S. escalated trade pressure this past weekend with a sudden reversal on electronics tariffs—initially exempting items like smartphones and laptops from new duties, only to reverse course within 48 hours and announce that no electronics would be spared. This adds to the existing 20% sanctions on Chinese tech imports.
At the same time, the White House banned exports of Nvidia’s H20 and AMD’s MI308 AI chips to China, citing national security concerns. Nvidia expects a $5.5 billion revenue hit, and AMD projects an $800 million impact.
Further intensifying the standoff, the administration launched two new Section 232 national security investigations—one targeting semiconductor imports and the other pharmaceuticals—signaling potential new tariffs on critical supply chain sectors heavily reliant on Asia.
China responded by halting deliveries of Boeing aircraft, dealing a blow to the U.S. aerospace sector, and signaling a pivot toward domestic aviation giant COMAC and Airbus.
Despite these moves, Beijing has allegedly expressed a conditional willingness to resume trade talks, emphasizing the need for respectful dialogue and consistency from Washington. China also wants broader discussions, including on Taiwan and sanctions relief.

Chip stocks fall as Nvidia, AMD warn of higher costs from China export controls

Semiconductor stocks took a hit Wednesday as the sector absorbed the full weight of the White House’s escalating trade war with China.
Nvidia dropped 8% after disclosing a $5.5 billion charge tied to new U.S. export restrictions on its China-focused H20 AI chips. AMD followed with news that it expects an $800 million revenue impact from similar limits on its MI308 processors. These disclosures mark the clearest signs yet that the administration’s aggressive stance is directly threatening chip sector growth.
In separate news, AMD announced it will manufacture chips at TSMC’s Arizona fab—a move meant to localize supply but one that comes at a steep cost as TSMC has raised U.S. fabrication pricing by 30%.
Meanwhile, disappointing results from ASML and a 4% drop in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF underscored mounting demand uncertainty.
The fallout rippled through the broader tech sector, dragging the Nasdaq down 2% as heavyweights like Meta, Alphabet, and Tesla also slid.
📚 EDGE-UCATION: What are semiconductors and why are they so important?
Semiconductors are materials that can partially conduct electricity, making them ideal for controlling electrical signals.
Semis are the foundation of microchips that power nearly all modern technology—from smartphones and laptops to cars, data centers, and defense systems. Their unique ability to switch, store, and amplify signals makes them essential to digital devices.
Their importance extends far beyond consumer electronics. Semiconductors drive innovation in AI, 5G, autonomous vehicles, and cloud computing. They're also vital to national security, as advanced chips are embedded in military systems and critical infrastructure.
As a result, control over semiconductor design and manufacturing has become a key driver of economic power and geopolitical influence. In today's world, semiconductors are not just tech—they’re strategic assets.

Tariffs on Chinese parts for Cybercab, Semi disrupt Tesla's US production plans

Tesla has suspended shipments of Chinese components for its upcoming Cybercab and Semi electric trucks after U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods surged to 145%, disrupting its production timeline.
The company had planned to begin trial production of the Cybercab in Texas and the Semi in Nevada by October, with mass production in 2026. While Tesla was initially prepared to absorb a 34% tariff, the sudden spike made the shipping costs untenable.
This disruption threatens two of Tesla’s most anticipated growth drivers. For the past two years, the company had been shifting toward North American sourcing in anticipation of tariff risk, but the latest moves came faster and harsher than expected.
China’s retaliatory 125% tariff on U.S. goods has further strained Tesla’s global plans, prompting it to stop taking new orders for its Model S and Model X in China. The escalating trade war underscores the vulnerability of global supply chains and could significantly impact Tesla’s production and delivery goals heading into 2026.
